Preparing a Junk Car That Has Been Stored for a Long Time

A vehicle can become harder to move as tires, brakes, vegetation and ground conditions change.

Inspect Without Assuming It Runs

Describe how long the car has been sitting. Check visible tire condition, sinking, corrosion and fluid leaks without starting or moving an unsafe vehicle.

Look Around the Vehicle

Photograph vegetation, fencing, soft ground and overhead branches. Do not enter areas with unsafe wildlife, unstable structures or electrical hazards.

Locate Keys and Documents

Search separately for available keys, title and registration. Remove personal property, but use care if insects, rodents or mold are present.

Clear Only a Safe Path

Remove lightweight obstacles when safe and permitted. Tell the buyer about locked brakes, missing tires or a vehicle embedded in soil before pickup.

Stored-Car Questions

Should I install a new battery first?

Not automatically. Explain the condition and compare the likely benefit before spending money.

Why mention vegetation?

It can hide wheels, obstacles, leaks and the true ground surface.
